Celebrating Creativity: Why Visual Arts Matter in Early Childhood

At Bright Steps Academy, we believe creativity, is a powerful way for children to express themselves, explore their world and strengthen their sense of identity.

Research shows that children who engage in creative experiences and learning often do better in other areas like science, maths and literacy. Visual arts engage both sides of the brain and support holistic growth.

When children are given time and space to explore ideas through visual arts, they’re building confidence, problem-solving skills and even forming early scientific thinking.

When children explore and learn about different artists and their techniques, it extends their understanding of the world around them. Whether it’s through the vibrant colours of Van Gogh or the textures of Monet, children begin to see visual arts as a way of telling stories and communicating their ideas on the world around them.

By guiding children to explore the works of different artists, our educators help them see that there are endless ways to express an idea or feeling.

Each artist offers a unique lens through which children can interpret their own thoughts and experiences, inspiring curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.

When children are encouraged to draw inspiration from a variety of styles, techniques, and cultural perspectives, they begin to make connections between their own artwork and the broader world. This not only strengthens their creative expression but also builds their confidence as capable, thoughtful creators with their own voices.

In early childhood education, reflection is key. During each experience provided, our educators take the time to reflect and think critically about the learning that is occurring and how children learn through the arts.
This process prompts our educators to then create follow up strategies to better support each child’s development and ideas.

Incorporating visual arts into early learning isn’t just an “extra”, it’s essential.

At Bright Steps Academy, we support children to discover what creativity means to them, whether through colour, sound, movement or storytelling.

As educators and families, we can work together to create environments where creativity is celebrated, identity is nurtured, and learning is joyful.
